A model of senior tourism motivations – Anecdotes from Beijing and Shanghai. Tourism Management

The study initiates an original inquiry into the motivations of senior tourism in China, a developing country which witnesses the fastest rate of aging in the world and is at the same time emerging as a global tourism superpower. Further, the study puts forward eight propositions, each of which is discussed in reference to extant tourism motivation literature.

Profiling the senior traveler: An Australian perspective

Recently, the behavior of senior travelers has become an important area of interest because of its market size and potential for growth. This study describes a study profiling senior travelers according to their demographic and psychographic characteristics. Six market segments were used to highlight the differences that exist in terms of holiday attractions, travel motivations, and information sources used among senior travelers when planning and choosing a holiday. Seniors are shown not to be a uniform conservative market, which has implications for marketing and product development.

Tourism as a Meansof Happiness and Subjective Well-Being.

Psychologically, tourism provides the greatest benefits for older travelers, as tourism provides the means by which many older adults are able to seek happiness and positive feelings related to their well-being and quality of life. This is because it helps improve mood while creating a positive outlook, feelings of wellbeing, and cheerfulness for older tourists. This conceptual paper focuses on how travel contributes to older tourists’ feelings of happiness and well-being.

Despite developments in the field of gender and tourism studies over the past ten years, there are noticeable gaps in the knowledge base. While the voices of women as tourists have begun to be heard, the voices of older women tourists have remained silent. Tourism studies have followed social trends in marginalizing this age group. This paper reports a study which was conducted on older women and their holiday experiences over the life course. Tourist experiences offer opportunities for what has been termed, the Ulyssean adult.
