How to deal with Tourism constraints for seniors? Evidence from social tourism programmes. 2021 J.of Tourism and Cultural Change.

The analysis intersects the three groups of constraints – intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural – with three strands of uncertainty faced by seniors – travel uncertainty, financial uncertainty and mobility uncertaintyand corresponding social support adjustments: personal support mechanisms and instrumental support mechanisms. The proposed model shows that travel social support is of central importance for effectively negotiating the travel constraints in social tourism for seniors.

Discusses ethical aspects of sustainable development embraced by older members of rural communities, and closely connected with the supply and demand sides of the silver tourism economy. The study revealed that the supply side of the silver tourism economy in rural areas was more developed than the demand side. Emphasis on the need for natural, cultural, social and economic resources (associated with the supply side) to support the demand side of the rural tourism market. Indication that ethical values and norms of sustainable development are important for the silver tourism economy.

The study initiates an original inquiry into the motivations of senior tourism in China, a developing country which witnesses the fastest rate of aging in the world and is at the same time emerging as a global tourism superpower. Further, the study puts forward eight propositions, each of which is discussed in reference to extant tourism motivation literature.
